Love this album. Had the old CD floating around my glovebox for many years. Then, when I almost forgot it ever existed, my daughters found ''That''s What''s Up'' and started singing it. Up From Below vs. Here: I read an interview with Alex Ebert in which he said that on the first album (Up from below) he felt they were sort of "trying too hard", while on this one the band really came together and they had the courage to "let the songs breathe". I couldn''t agree more and could not have said it better! "Here" is an awesome album that demands a few spins around the CD player/turntable to appreciate (I was hooked at the 2nd time) and you will find that it is much better than "Up From Below". I bought both of them and I think that songs # 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 on "Up From Below" are standard fare that many of these winy-sounding bands churn out these days (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade and so on). I mixed all my favourite Sharpe songs on one CD and ended up using all songs from "Here", but only #s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 12, 13 from "Up From Below" made the cut. These songs are great, have some grittiness, and with 7 out of 13 one should be quite happy these days: these guys are awesome! Yet, "Here" is much better because the songs are smoother and more complex, are more richly arranged, and the recordings are MUCH better. You probably won''t be able to appreciate this on a measly MP3 player where half your data is lost, but on serious equipment (CD player playing WAV or turntable playing vinyl, with a good amp and speakers), you can hear all the instruments individually or together, depending on what you focus on. There is no lame song on "Here" - the whole album belongs together, and 9 out of 9 is a great loot. "Here" rewards if you listen more closely and it gives back more as well - it''s fully grown music. If you have some practice listening to jazz, classical music, enjoy the sing-along style of Aquarius (Hair), and the song-writing of Leonard Cohen or Neil Diamond, Ray Davies (Kinks), the Doors - I was even reminded of Cat Stevens'' voice at some places - you will have a lot of fun with "Here". The way these guys/girls pay homage to the past, yet create their very own sound, is breathtaking and a lot of fun. Some reviewers have complained there are no hits on "Here". I would say that "Man on Fire" is just as good as "Home", if not better. I never heard of Edward Sharpe & Co, saw them on Letterman doing "Man on Fire", rushed online to check them out, and became a fan instantly.

"Man on Fire" sounded familiar, but it first really stood out to me when I watched the HBO documentary "The Diplomat" (another piece I''d highly recommend!). This song played with the closing credits I believe, perhaps during the film as well.

(Much better in my opinion than "ES&TMZ" [2013], which I found generally irritating.) Afraid this artist''s sound is diverging from my music preference.

I am a huge fan of the first Edward Sharp album, and while I still enjoyed this one quite a bit, it doesn''t seem to be as prolific in my mind. It features the female singer Jade much more than Alex, which isn''t necessarily a bad thing, I just find Alex''s voice to have greater diversity than Jade''s. That being said, there are definitely some catchy songs on here that you''ll want to listen to, especially if you''re already a fan.

This album has a more soothing, low key quality to it than the first. One review I read described it as sounding very much like a session than a selection of songs and I''d agree. I may come back to write more once this album has set in and I''ve played it a few times more but in short I''d recommend it to anyone that liked their first album or anything in between low-fi folk & blues. One track, Child, is reminiscent of Mississippi John Hurt''s Oh Lord Send Me which is no bad thing.
